Have the results of the proposed changes been tested?

  • I use the packages affected by the proposed changes on a regular basis and confirm this PR works for me
  • I generally don't use the affected packages but briefly tested this PR

Just a heads up, the author of fast-syntax-highlighting has wiped everything from everywhere and gone AWOL.
more info can be found in this reddit thread about the whole situation

After some more investigation, it appears that installing this plugin system-wide results in subtle bugs that I don't know how to fix. As such, I am closing this PR.
