The following could be done:
This will technically work but I am not sure about the performance. Also, since the two halves form two different displays, they sync separately which will form a visible tearing on fast moving scenes in the middle of the screen (just like it was the case with early 4K displays). BetterDummy does not do this out of the box (the current public version has no streaming, the development version cannot stream to two view layers a single virtual display, as the need did not come up, but this can obviously be changed, it is a matter of coding only). |

Ok, so you think it may be possible with some work. Thank you for the quick response! The other possibility was to use something like these, which are basically a headless adapter on steroids, allowing pass-through. My guess is that it could be used to essentially trick your computer into thinking each DisplayPort connection is it's own monitor. But that's a big if. |

Actually, on second inspection, it appears that adapter wouldn't work since it just mimics the hot plug detect signal, and therefore I'm guessing it simply passes the original monitors EDID information on through. |

MST is not what is needed here. The 2xDisplayPort 1.4 connections are SST. The problem is that macOS doesn't support arbitrary tiled displays. It can do old 4K MST tiled displays (except not for M1 Macs?). It can do 5K tiled displays (both 2160 and 2880 heights). It can do 6K tiled display. But it can't do 4K144 or 8K60 tiled displays.
The Dell UP3218K display already has a PBP mode which is how you can connect it as two 3840x4320 displays. If a patch to macOS to allow 8K60 tiled display cannot be found, then I guess the easiest method to get this to work would be the virtual display streaming to the two half displays of the 8K idea mentioned in the previous posts. I think the best way to solve this issue without having to depend on Apple would be an adapter that can take 8K60 DSC input and output two 3840x4320 signals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmOlxpvZq5M |

Unfortunately, I doubt that we'll see any such device made. By the time something like that would finally make it to market, we'll probably have 8k monitors that support DSC available, effectively overcoming this limitation. |

macOS 12.3 has a new .mtdd override file ( /System/Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-10ac/DisplayProductID-4147.mtdd ) for the UP3218K. Does it work? You may need to remove any existing overrides you've created. It has two tiled modes. One for 48Hz and another for 60Hz. I suppose the 48Hz might be needed for 10bpc? |

@joevt, this is the most exciting thing I've heard since I got this damn display in 2019! I'm only four months behind in noticing :) Now, I've been using SwitchResX to get 8K@30Hz up until now. Now that I'm looking (on 12.4), it does seem that I can actually get 8K@30Hz just from the Mac System Preferences without using SRX! (although, all I have done is stop and disable the daemon from inside SRX, "Factory Reset" the settings, and reboot. I'm not sure if this is enough to "remove any existing overrides you've created" - if you can give any more guidance, I'd appreciate it).
This gives me 8K@30Hz. I can't screen-cap the drop-down for refresh rates, but it only shows 29.88Hz and 24Hz. If I select 3840 x 2160 (low resolution), I get 4K (and 60Hz is available). This feels really close! Any ideas? (As an aside, it's behaving flaky af. If I close my laptop screen, sometimes the Dell will go off and not come back up. Really anything that causes a change to display settings might lose the display and require a reboot.) |

The override file that SwitchResX creates for 8K30 remains even when SwitchResX is not running (it is loaded by WindowServer / CoreDisplay.framework). You can remove the override file manually in the Finder, or use SwitchResX "Restore factory settings" button which does the same thing. As for the update created by Apple for the UP3218K, I believe it's not actually working. You'll see in the displaypolicyd log file for your GPU (e.g. But even before that message, you'll probably see these: I've created a OpenCore/Lilu/WhateverGreen project that patches displaypolicyd to make it load overrides from /Library instead of /System (like what CoreDisplay.framework does), so that the override files used by displaypolicyd can be edited, but I don't know of any edits that can make multi-cable display work with the Dell UP3218K (8K60) or my Acer XV273K (4K144). |

Of course, my WhateverGreen displaypolicyd patch doesn't apply to M1 Macs. I don't know what parts of macOS access override files for Apple Silicon Macs. Do they use WindowServer/CoreDisplay.framework and displaypolicyd? I don't think so? We know that Apple Silicon Macs don't read EDID overrides from the /Library override files (which is what SwitchResX modifies). I wonder if EDID overrides from /System override files work? Of course, there's no easy way to modify System override files which is why I created the displaypolicyd patch. I think there's ways to modify System override files (you need to break the snapshot seal? Then reseal when you're done? I'm not sure.) Maybe change SIP settings to disable detrace restrictions, then use the following command to see if a process (displaypolicyd in this example) accesses the override files when you connect a display: |

Dell UP3218K might work 6K60 on MacPro7,1 running Ventura (brinlyau found some code in displaypolicyd that specifically mentions this display and the MacPro7,1). We don't know if it works yet. Currently working on a patch to remove the MacPro7,1 check. |

Got it working at 8k60 :) on Ventura with a patch to remove the check! I'll try clean up the hacky code we have and ideally not require OpenCore (maybe we can do a lldb based patch)! |

I would to point out that Mac has to be introduced in 2023 in order to have a support for 8k. Unfortunately plugging my Macbook Pro M2 2022 with Ventura 13.4.1 to Dell UP3218k using two USB-C to DP 1.4 cables results only in the half of the resolution of 8k and DP1 or DP2 input source instead of DP1 + DP2 just like @HansBouwmeester posted. Any tip would be much appreciated in case there is a solution here. |

If you're using this one, with the plain M2 chip (as opposed to the M2 Pro, M2 Max or M2 Ultra), I think that's expected - the regular M2 (and the regular M3 for that matter) are only able to drive one external display, and since the UP3218K is effectively 2 displays, I don't expect it would work with a regular M2 or M3; the Pro, Max or Ultra variant is needed. It's also possible that the plain M2 Mac mini may work, since that's documented as supporting 2 displays, presumably since it lacks a built-in one. |

All Apple Silicon Macs support the LG UltraFine 5K display which is a dual tile display that uses two DisplayPort HBR2 x4 connections over Thunderbolt, one for each 2560x2880 half of the display. The same is true for the Dell UP2715K which does not use Thunderbolt. The Dell UP3218K is also a dual tile display. It accepts two HBR3 x4 connections, one for each 3840x4320 half of the display. There's no reason it shouldn't work with all Apple Silicon Macs also, like the Dell UP2715K except that Apple limited the maximum size or total pixel rate on some of the Apple Silicon Macs (either in software or hardware) so that you have to buy a newer Mac or an Apple XDR display to get more than 5K. |

Man how I love the glossiness of the 8k over the 6k matte... Just so sad that macOS doesn't do the x3 scaling, and 1440p scaled mode looks fuzzy, and the x2 scaling at 2160p is too small even for my somewhat younger eyes. Hopefully they release a new glossy 6k dell at some point, the XDR is too expensive. |

its not possible with 2 cables from 2 thunderbolt ports. you need a
thunderbold dual display port adapter which support 8k. for now only
startech works. we are on testing more adapters.
i am trying to make a list until end of the week which adapters work.

2 cables from 2 Thunderbolt or DisplayPort ports is the only way to get 8K60 to the Dell UP3218K. A Thunderbolt Dual DisplayPort Adapter cannot output the two HBR3 signals that the Dell UP3218K requires for 8K60. The only way that could possibly work is if you had two DisplayPort 1.4 MST hubs that each were taking a HBR2 DSC signal from the adapter and converting that to HBR3 for output to the Dell UP3218K. 5K and 8K dual tile displays do not use MST - they use dual SST. An MST hub can take MST input and output multiple SST. Maybe windows or Linux could get 2 HBR3 signals from a single MST hub to support 8K60 to the Dell UP3218K. I know its possible for 5K60 but that's only 2 HBR2 signals. An MST hub can do 3 HBR2 signals for 3 4K60 displays. macOS does not support MST for multiple displays and I think Apple Silicon removes support of MST for old 4K60 dual tile displays. |

8K30 or 7680x2160@60Hz means only one of the DisplayPort connections is being used. Instead of using the Thunderbolt to Dual DisplayPort 1.4 adapter, you could just use a single USB-C to DisplayPort cable. |

The Dell UP3218K is the only 8k computer monitor on the market at the moment. Unfortunately, the only connectivity it offers is 2xDisplayPort 1.4 without DSC, with each cable comprising half of the screen (as a tiled display). Since MacOS doesn't properly support MST, that means the only option for connecting this monitor to MacOS is to use a single cable, which only allows for 8k@30hz, unless you were cool with running each half of the screen in mirrored mode (which is what you get when connecting both cables).
Does BetterDummy offer some way to work around this? There are numerous threads on MacRumors regarding this, but nobody seems to have a real solution to it.
