It feels all a bit too close-up, especially when you want an overview of the world in general. Is there an option to zoom out some more so that you can see a much larger portion of the world at once?

Yes, you will be able to somewhere in the future. It'll cost more cpu/disk-io though.

maybe have a setting in the server to set min/max zoom

doesn't need to render other images, just do a client-side down-sampling of the image we have now?

for the zoom out yes, but not for zoom in :)

For zooms in, that would be great to be able to set a different render interval.

For example :
zoom 1 : 5s (downsampling zoom 2)
zoom 2 (default) : 1s
zoom 3 : 30s (downsampling zoom 4)
zoom 4 : 60s (uses another methode to render detailed tiles)
