Original Text

12 YW
Orcs fail to take the Wesmere Forest and instead march down the coast, devastating human settlements there.
Elves refuse to aid the humans in confronting the orcs.
Human refugees from the coastal settlements relocate in what will become known as the Great Central Plain. Dan'Tonk, which will become Wesnoth's largest city, is founded.
20 YW
Haldric I dies.
Haldric II ascends to the throne.
Kalenz and Landar escape an orcish invasion of their home in Lintanir Forest. [The Legend of Wesmere]begins.
Humans and elves decisively defeat the orcs at Tath, thus halting the orcish advance.

Proposed Change

I think there is an inconsistency, it states in 12 YW the orcs don't take Wesmere and then attack the humans, then in 20 YW Haldric dies and his son takes his place, and only then does it say that the Legend of Wesmere begins with Kalenz leaving Lintanir with Landar. I feel the events that it says take place in 12 YW reflect things that happen AFTER Kalenz leaves Lintanir and arrives to save the Ka'lian, not 8 years before. In the dialogue notes of scenario 13 News from the Front Kalenz and Landar are coming back south from visiting Crenalu, and only then does it talk of the orcs attacking the humans after their failure at Wesmere (failure which happened specifically because of Kalenz' intervention during the campaign). Maybe I'm misreading things, but I feel the stuff that currently reads as happening in 12 YW happens after the start of Legend of Wesmere (stated as 20YW), not before.

I believe those are two separate invasions by the orcs. 11 YW is when the treaty between the humans and elves is shown to be not upheld, which led to the orcs being able to attack the human settlements without being backstabbed by the elves.

8 YW

A second wave of orcs arrive from the Green Isle; these orcs begin claiming large portions of the northern Great Continent for themselves.
Erlornas of Wesmere is involved in the first direct elvish clash with orcs.
Haldric I publicly repudiates the Pact he spoke with the elves, refusing to give aid.

9-11 YW

Many elves are killed in battle by the orcs.
Elvish emissaries are turned away from Wesnoth.

Also, from LoW, S1:
The friends came of age in the very year that Erlornas of Wesmere fought the first orcish raiders. Within the next decade orcish raids greatly increased, and their shadow loomed ever greater over the elves.

I'd actually instead argue that the behaviour of the elvish ally in S1 is very weird after 10+ years of constant fights between orcs and elves.

Looking through campaigns:

firstly, did An Orcish Incursion happen at all given it's not mainline anymore? Did it "Happen" but just not depicted officially?

Assuming it did happen, the timeline talks about many elves killed clearly AFTER An Orcish Incursion, when Erlornas supposedly saved Wesmere from a greater invasion. AOI is largely depicted as a series of skirmishes to prevent a big battle, rather than the big battle itself. If right away a bunch of elves are killed after Erlornas succeeds, that kind of contradicts the whole point of that campaign. Throughout AOI, they don't talk of Haldric repudiating the treaty at all or even asking humans for help.

Looking at Scenario 8 of LOW, it really reads like the things that supposedly per current timeline had happened a decade previously:

Scenario 8: Council of Hard Choices
Story Dialogue
Lady Dionli: Kalenz, you have won a great victory! Wesmere is safe. But... for what cause have you invited a dwarf to the elvish council? This is most unusual!

Kalenz: My lords, this is Olurf. He and his dwarves have fought by our side and have well earned a place in this meeting. The war that comes upon us must be met by all in Wesnoth; Elves, Dwarves and Humans.

El’Isomithir: Leave the Humans out of this. King Haldric has broken the treaty we signed with him eleven years ago, and has sent back all our emissaries. When he arrived on our shore he was very humble, but now his arrogance knows no bounds. He believes the Orcs will not dare to fight him.

Kalenz: My lords, the Orcs have been pushed out of Wesmere, but they are far from defeated. We must take the fight to them, recover our lost lands and smash their great horde beyond possibility that it will threaten us again.

Legmir: too many elves have died already. To take the war to the Orcs, we would have to risk all our remaining fighters on one throw. And we are not as skilled in fighting outside our forests. We have already shown the Orcs that attacking us is folly; the prudent course would be to rebuild our strength.

The idea of Haldric breaking the treaty is spoken of as something that just happened, not something that happened a decade ago, so to me that doesn't mesh well with the timeline as it stands.

Also, El’Isomithir clearly says the treaty was signed eleven years previously to that moment (supposedly YW 20), but, again, per timeline, it was signed in year 1, so that just can't work. This implies that they are talking in year 12, not year 20.
