This document proposes new entries in Common Code Tables C-1, C-11, C-5 and C-8 for commercial providers of radio occultation data.
Action proposed
The team is requested to review and approve the new entries for inclusion in the November 2020 fast-track updates.
Discussions
NOAA is presently in discussion with commercial entities to provide supplementary radio occultation data for use in NWP. Observational data provided under the contract will be encoded in BUFR using an existing standard sequence for radio occultation data, but new common code table entries are needed to properly identify the source and instrumentation of the data.
The contract is being negotiated with a stipulation to allow the data to be shared freely and in real-time (via GTS) with other government-funded NMHS centers around the globe, for use in NWP and supporting research. However, the data would not be freely available to competing commercial entities nor to other non-governmental organizations.
