To replicate add a Mathtex equation, resize it, move and edit it. When changed it will return to full size.

This could still be improved - it preserves the size of the new equation but it doesn't keep the width vs height ratio the same. I think the best way will be to compute the height/width ratio of the new equation, make the height constant, and readjust the width according to the ratio to keep squares squares.
