Unimacs means universal emacs

It’s at first forked from prelude, because I used GVIM before.

Prelude’s configuration contains many good packages, zenburn theme, very good framework to manage and extend packages, and many other good things. But most important thing is that it contains an Evil mode(VIM), which is a emulator of Vim in Emacs, and I used Evil mode a lot for months after that.

I believe that Evil mode means Vim + Emacs, which would be the best way to use Emacs at that time. Fast movement and edit, good window management, friendly file opening interface, etc.

But when use the help system inside Emacs, it becomes very annoying. I should switch between Evil-mode and Emacs key bindings often.

At the same time, I use a lot settings from purcell. Purcell uses Evil-mode before, too. But he stop using Evil-mode someday, and use the Emacs keybindings completely.

A lot of people doubt him why to do like that, “Evil mode is the best way to use Vim and Emacs”, why?

But after a couple of days struggling with Evil-mode mode switch and Emacs’s keybindings, I decided to follow Purcell and use Emacs keybindings, too.

Then I create a new emacs configuration package named Unimacs. I hope I can use the Emacs keybindings consistently and merge some ideas or behaviors from Vim, and finally combine both of them.

Structure of Unimacs

  • init.el

The start file: load the core and packages, and init the environment variables.

  • core

The unimacs framework: based on prelude

  • packages
    • elpa

The official packages from melpa, or popkit .

    • vendor

From github or other resources. I write or modified some packages, too.

  • utils

The snippets or executable tools under Windows system.

  • tempfiles
  • personal

The configuration files are placed here. Use use-package (improve the start-up speed rapidly) to load and configure the packages. And select-packages.el to choose the packages to use.

Install instructions

  1. First of all, we should install a Emacs from GNU Emacs.
  2. We git clone or download this package.
  3. On Windows, start Emacs, and use C-x C-f to open “~/.emacs” file. Then text
    (load-file "/path/to/unimacs/init.el")

  4. After that, save the “.emacs” file and restart the Emacs, then Emacs will download all the required package from melpa or popkit for you, and that’s all. However, this will take minutes to download and compile the packages, depending on the download speed. Please wait patiently and don’t close. At the end, Emacs may display some compiling warnings, just ignore them, that doesn’t matter.
