Issue and Volume (for newspaperArticle)

The "Issue"/issue and "Volume"/volume fields (mapped to issue and volume in CSL) should be added to newspaperArticle.

You know that thread says these fields are needed, but doesn't cite any practical case for them. I've cited a lot of newspapers in my research, but never come across volume and issue numbers (which seems rather unnecessary given how they're released).

So it's not a big deal, but could we at least document one example of a) a newspaper that includes this information, and b) a style that requires it?

b) I can't find any styles that require it, but I have examples of real citations in published works that use it in place of the date of publication.

a) I have hundreds-- every Russian newspaper in the late 19th century and early 20th century. And the practice continues today, although I think dates are more central than they once were.

Part of the reason for issue numbers, I think, is that newspapers were not always so regularly published. My research includes papers that published every other day, or 2-3 times a week. Add to that the fact that papers had to pass the censor and that issues could be arrested from time to time, and the printed dates on newspapers end up being quite messy. Serial numbers are a second piece of data that becomes more useful when printing is irregular.

And issue is useless without volume, since some newspapers restarted issue numbering with each volume. And volumes are usually the same as years of publication, but even that is not always clear. The volume is also a required piece of locator information to order newspapers in Russian library practice (since they are bound and cataloged primarily by title and volume-- year and issue or date are not sufficient to locate the items in many cases).

@bdarcus: a) In France, this is very common to give issue number to newspaper. b) I can't give you the name of an official style which requires it but I have many examples in real citations.. In a nutshell: + 1 with ajlyon

FWIW, I've come across this issue (no pun intended) with magazine articles. So I'd suggest loosening that up as well.

TBH, not sure on formatting yet. But my research assistant used the journal article type to enter records like this: Huck, Susan L.M. “About Alaska: And the Heavy Hand of Washington.” American opinion 17.5 (1974): 1–12.
