Media Scanner and Indexer written in Go

Overview

Basically, we wish to manage our media – video, pdfs, everything. This is my personal project to have a powerful command-line tool to allow for this so I can find anything instantly and play or load if I like to.

Motivation

I need a “good excuse” to learn Go, and this is it. The use of goroutines, channels, and the select statement will make this all key.

Later, I might consider adding a GUI to this all, but not anytime soon! I am a command-line guy, after all.

Notes

These are my “private” notes section, and are not meant to be of use to anyone else. However bemusing you may find the entries after this point, do not take them seriously, and they may be removed at some point. Everything of revelance will appear above here.

Databases to consider

I need a lightweight and fast DB to use for managing the metadata. But some considerations should be given to using something like MongoDB or Postgres to allow non-Go code to interact with the DB. Also, there is one Go DB that exposes a MySQL-looking API. Hmmm, lots of choices to consider for what is basically my “pet” project.

https://github.com/dgraph-io/badger#using-keyvalue-pairs https://github.com/boltdb/bolt (but this has been archived, so not bloodly likely I’d use this) https://github.com/influxdata/influxdb (too heavyweight for my needs here, but could be useful on other projects) https://github.com/globalsign/mgo (MongoDB – heavyweight, but doable, and will allow me to use non-Go code as well. Hmmm…) https://github.com/olivere/elastic (Elasticsearch, my old pal!!!!)

I might to opt for MongoDB. It’s “schemaless”, and the documents are easy to extend. Also, Elasticsearch may be a better option, but I am leery of using it for “mainline” storage. However, do we care? If the darn thing dies, all I have to do is rescan everything.

If I want to get really ballsy, I could use ES in combination with, say, MongoDB. But this is just my personal media collection for crying out loud! Can you say, “overkill”, boys and girls? Well, we’ll see.

just so you know.
