For Linux

chrome uses

-in gnome environment gnome proxy settings

-in kde environment kde proxy settings

i assume through freedesktop standards
thus
i assume you must replace these proxy settings feature by your own

Happy to announce Linux support in version 1.2.0, please install and test the
new
version and report any problem you face.
I've tested this version on Ubuntu 9.10 only, though it should work at on any
Gnome

again but the extension does not work. I am on Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64.

with privoxy (local proxy to delete all advertisements) located at port 8118

i make a manual proxy settings

http_proxy: = http://localhost:8118
https_proxy:https://localhost:8118
no_proxy = localhost;127.0.0.1

1. proxy feature works well now

i can't switch from proxy to no proxy thus i stay with proxy activated
and
there is no more contextual menu to select "options" for switchy settings
i must use chrome menu "settings/extension" then select "switchy/options"
to have the ability to set switchy

3 i unactivate "quick switch"
then
with switchy contextual menu
i can't switch from proxy to no proxy thus i stay with proxy activated

Running chromium (svn revision 34467) on ArchLinux (i686) and KDE 4.3.4. I
cannot
make this to work. Since 1.2.0, the log reports:
[15:00:20] [info] - Browser Info: 5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US)
AppleWebKit/532.7

[15:04:46] [success] - Plugin working properly..
[15:04:46] [success] - 'localStorage' supported..
[15:04:46] [success] - Wrote to local storage successfully..

But the options are all messed up. If I set a profile and select it, overing
the
switchy icon tells me I'm using the other profile. And the proxy profile is
never
respected: it always uses a direct connection.

@nikhail, @hugo actually I haven't try it on 64bit distributions, but will try
it asap
and fix the problem.

@episteme, @nbigaouette since the plugin was loaded and had no problem I think
it's all
about KDE, I'll test it on KDE and fix this issue.

I need someone to confirm that it works on Gnome distributions (x86) (like
Ubuntu 9.xx
x86).

OS: Ubantu 9.10 32bit
Browser: (Chromium)4.0.249.30 and (Chrome)4.0.266.0

I use a SSH as SOCKS proxy. But Switchy will set the "HTTP area" a wrong
value(which is
("socks=127.0.0.1") in system proxy setting.
So I use privoxy to change it into a HTTP proxy, and it work great.
Anyone with the same problem can try privoxy~~

It's Linux day :)
- Added support for Gnome (64 bit) and KDE (32/64 bit), tested on Ubuntu
(Gnome) 32/64
bit and Fedora (KDE) 32 bit.
- Also implemented Switch Rules for Linux (all).
The new version 1.3.5 will be released later today.

I have tested in on Debian testing 64-bit with KDE.
HTTP proxies and proxy selection works, but if I switch to "Direct Connection"
and
refresh, selection goes back to proxy. I solved it by using auto switch mode
with
default rule "Direct Connection".
Also, profile with only SOCKS proxy specified and no HTTP proxy doesn't work.

Yeah, Chrome ~/.kde bug is very discreet, glad to help.

I tested the new version. I usually don't shutdown my laptop so Chrome is
running for
circa 3 days now. I mentioned the Switchy! had failed (error log similar to
@kynix.leo) and manually reloaded it. After that it started working for me even
with
Auto Switch feature! Thanks Mohammadhi ;)

I personally dislike the need of tab restarting (or pressing F5 many many
times)
after the manual proxy change. But it may be something in Chrome.

One more piece of knowledge. I've restarted KDE after upgrade and freshly

nothing

Hi again,
This is a test plugin, I removed some code and make various changes.
It's not supposed to actually work well and change the proxy, but to just run
and
doesn't report any error.
Please try it and send me the error log it generates (if there is an error).
The output log will be saved in '/var/tmp/switchy.log'.

Hi again,

thanx for your active development.

Test plugin is working here (Ubuntu 9.1 32). Switchy plugin still not
functional.

It seems a call to GetConnections() causes problems.

Here the chrome log mechanism doesn't work as described in the official chrome
wiki
you link to in your wiki. No log file is created, instead I get something to
std
error, which is the output that I paste in attached file.

Hope this helps,

Cheers, Helmut

Well, I have made a lot of changes in the plugin, and enhanced the error
reporting.
I hope this version will work well (or at least the plugin will be loaded
successfully).
Here is how to test this beta version:
  1. Disable the installed version of Switchy.
  2. Install the attached .crx file "Switchy-1.6.0b2.crx".
  3. And you're done.

--
Note-1:
Logging is enabled in this beta version, and the output log will be saved in
'/var/tmp/switchy.log', so if you face any problems, please send me the log
file.

Note-2:
Uninstall this beta version when you no longer need it or the new version released.

After reading everything until now i was quite puzzled by the explanations of
how
switchy works on Linux. Am i right to assume that Chrome does not provide any
way for
extensions to change it's internal proxy settings, but does automatically
reconfigure
itself when proxy settings for KDE or Gnome programs are changed (The only
rational
explanation for switchy to mess with settings that affect other programs)?

If my assumtion is right then it is quite sad that extension with such great
functionality has such limited usability - both people like me, who don't (and
won't)
use KDE/GNOME and people who use them, but don't want their programs to go
haywire
because of random session-wide proxy changes while browsing can't use switchy.

If i'm mistaking and it is possible for an extension to change Chrome proxy
settings
then there is something very wrong with your approach to the Linux port.

By the way: Does switchy also change system wide proxy settings under Windows?
I
installed it on my friend's PC and must warn him to remove it before any
problems
appear if it has the same behaviour.

@dkavlakov "Am i right to assume that Chrome does not provide any way for
extensions to change
it's internal proxy settings"
- Yes, you're right.
"both people like me, who don't (and won't) use KDE/GNOME"
- Well, they still can use Switchy (see this
http://code.google.com/p/switchy/wiki/LinuxSupport).
"By the way: Does switchy also change system wide proxy settings under Windows?
I
installed it on my friend's PC and must warn him to remove it before any
problems
appear if it has the same behaviour."
- Yes, but which problems are you talking about?

About the main issue, Chrome doesn't have its own proxy settings yet, so it
uses the system's
proxy, and if you read the description of Switchy you'll see a clear note about
this issue
(https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/caehdcpeofiiigpdhbabniblemipncjj).
Anyway, when Chrome implements its own proxy settings, Switchy will use them
and drop the
plugins in the next day!
In summary, Switchy does exactly what you'll do if you want to change Chrome
proxy settings, no
more, no less.
Thanks for your feedback

> - Yes, but which problems are you talking about?

Basically i tried to use chromium/switchy as less bloated replacement for the
firefox/foxy proxy combination. There was a wildcard/regex based auto-switching
configuration, used to connect to various monitoring pages on complex VLAN/VPN
based
network.

While it generally worked, introducing unpredictable random system-wide proxy
changes
on a windows PC, used for support purposes by the local BOFH (without his
knowledge)
is something with the potential to become very amusing spectacle. Of cause it
would
be less amusing for the one accused in the end for causing all the problems (me
in
this case).

Fortunately i managed to remove switchy before anyone noticed, so the one
accused for
the proxy changes was Bill Gates (as usual).

@episteme.promeneur About the last issue, it's by design. Anyway, Chrome has

@nbigaouette, episteme.promeneur Thanks for testing it and for your continuous
feedback :)

@dkavlakov Sorry about that, but as I said before, It's a Chrome limitation
that you
couldn't change Chrome's proxy without affecting the system proxy settings.

Well, we can now close this issue, please report any new problem on a new issue.
Thank you all for your feedback.

The new version 1.6.0 has just been released.
If you have 1.6.0b2 installed, you need to uninstall it manually before
installing the
new version.
Please report any problem on a separate issue.

@episteme.promeneur You may need to update to the last dev version of Chrome.

Same problem as previous commenter.

I am using Arch Linux too.

Any update on this? I think the ticket should be reopened.
