New And Bible release 3.4 is planned within the coming few months. There are some substantial new features in the new release:

• Char-accurate bookmarks
• Bookmarks & My Notes merged & improved
• My Notes commentary view
• Study Pads for creating sermon notes etc.
• Add-on font packs
• Strongs dictionary by clicking words

As we are in Beta phase, we are mainly fixing bugs and smoothing the rough edges. Although there can be still minor changes to strings, it is good time to start updating translations.

I have learned from earlier releases, that good translations are essential to And Bible releases. Thus, 3.4 final release can not be proceeded to production until all main translations have been finished satisfactorily. I will be praying (and welcome you to join) that we would not lack any important translations when the release is ready to go to production.

I re-ordered the list in OP so the first rows (up to India) are the languages with most installs according to Play Store. It is possible there are more languages with a high priority that I don't know the country off the top of my head. Also, languages like Chinese and Spanish, and probably some more, are likely used from many countries.

One thing I would like to emphasize, that although there are quite many new / changed translatable strings in the upcoming release, most of changes to existing strings are minor, and you can handle them easily by the tip given in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy3nDUPfDGM

If you have done translation, you can/should test the next published beta version to see how your translation works in practice, and then you can make fixes if needed. Build 524 is now going to Play beta channel. It contains new translations from transifex that I pulled yesterday.

It contains some new features that are not yet translatable (strings are to be checked still).
We have also noticed that some strings need to be shortened and we are thinking about options for them.

Dear And Bible translators,

English source strings are now frozen for 3.4 release. This means that we are really getting close to the release of 3.4. I have done my best to make sure that we have now all necessary strings translatable for the release and even for few straight-forwards improvements after the release. From now on, we will only do changes/additions to strings if it is absolutely necessary (i.e. fixing of obvious mistakes etc).

3.4 release will be huge improvement (in my opinion), and marks the largest And Bible release I have been involved in. Thus we have wanted to fine-tune the user experience extra carefully, and hence there have still been recently some significant new additions to translatable strings.

I’m asking you to kindly do the following:

1. Please finalize your translations so that BibleView.js, strings.xml and Play Store text resources are 100% translated.
2. Then please check your translations by installing the next available Beta release (released ~ once per week with fresh translations included)
3. Revise translations if needed.

Big thanks for those that have already done most of the translation work! Planned release date for 3.4 is 29nd July 2021 (approx 1 month from now) but to avoid 1-star reviews from users that don’t understand English, we can’t proceed with the release until all major languages have been translated. Big thanks for your continued commitment to And Bible Open Source Project!

Hello, I just translated the new strings - however, the string "This setting applies to this 1%s" (361) uses "window" or "workspace", which in english can both be used with the word "this". In italian, "window" is feminine and requires "questa" (this), "workspace" is masculine and requires "questo"; since I could only choose one word, I used "questo", so in this case the translation is not perfect.

Thanks for letting me know. Perhaps this is a mistake we should change in source text, but as a workaround, you could
move word "questa/questo" to be together with window / workspace strings (instead of preceding string).
It could of course cause issues if the same string is in used in some other context, but at the moment it is the only use case (and should remain so).

@tuomas2 I'm checkind 4.0 and thinking about 'Study Pads' vs 'My Notes'. Are 'Study Pads' 'My Notes' on stereoids? TBH there is no good translation for 'Study Pads' in Hungarian... it all sounds artificial in the context.

I understand Study Pads as TOPIC (label) notes and My Notes as CHAPTER notes. There is much overlap though - Study Pad notes in a specific chapter will all show up in the My Notes view.

We are in progress of creating tutorials (@agrogers). I think overlapping of these concepts is coming naturally and is unavoidable. We have done several iterations of UX improvements based on feedback now, but it is indeed possible we will keep improving after 4.0 is released (towards 4.1).

Yes, they are 'virtual documents', kind of user-provided documents.

Since translators do not know the whole application it is not so easy to find the string in app without knowing the context. E.g. 'Hidden shortcuts'. Have no clue where it is, so I'm not able to translate within context.

No, there are names of Bible books. I'm looking for the source of Bible release names. I can see English names on Czech Bibles within the documents and right topbar.

Those are coming from the modules themselves. For example, B21 has "Czech Bible, Preklad 21...". "Czech Bible" there is coming from Description field of module configuration. Therefore, module conf files should be fixed to make them translated properly. You can file a ticket to https://tracker.crosswire.org/secure/Dashboard.jspa about that.

We wanted to add translatable strings now to allow inclusion of those features without heavy translation cycle and waiting for various translators.

Context tells already that the item is keyed with name "help_hidden_features_title". Added another context hint "Main menu > Help & Tips > Hidden shortcuts".

thanks for the feedback, I think yesterday night I found the right solution.

Interestingly there is no word in Hungarian for Whiteboard / or Idea collecting pin board -- or any of them is very much related to the physicalities so don't apply here. Finally (? 🙂 ) I use the word 'Jegyzetlap', which is basically a sheet of paper where you can make notes ­- not only one note, i.e not a post-it or a little piece of paper, so it is a proper sheet of paper. A study is something more serious than to be done on a handheld device ... maybe later on some sort of desktop synchronization would be useful for Study Pads, not as if I'd be aware of any open format that would suit (maybe a simple markdown?).

#154 is a feature request for that.

Proper 2-way sync would require more than markdown because of the links to Scripture references and bookmarks/labels that are integrated with the study pads

Google Play Beta channel is not getting all new builds. Google Play would have anyway more delay (sometimes hours, sometimes even days) because Google reviews each update manually.

Everything is getting ready for release and I am happy to announce that we are planning to start rolling out release on week 36. Most likely on thursday 9.9 which is my most common day for And Bible work, but if I have some extra time, I could start already earlier that week. If the language that you are responsible of is not ready yet, please aim to finish translation work before that!

Is there a public list of translations for Android-"standard" terms?

For example, my stock Android 11, in Dutch, always has "modus" where the original Android screens must have "mode". I'd think Google documented that somewhere-- but I haven't found it yet.

And what is preferred when the original never uses a word ("applicatie" or "toepassing" is never used in stock Android, it is always "app")? Just act as if the English And Bible screen says "app" instead of "application"?

I haven't found a way to update the Transifex word list yet, but I'm assuming that there is where I document such idiom decisions?

For now I'm assuming that any translation is better than none.

(Oh, and I'll be doing nl_nl as opposed to nl_be (Belgium). Mijn verontschuldigingen, Vlaamse vrienden! 🙂)
