FITS is a file format that can hold bitmap data, it is the de-facto standard in astronomical imaging and image processing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FITS
Most image processing programs for astrophotography and astrometry are natively working with FITS. Some of them can import raw files (with limited influence on the debayering settings) or other file formats and then internally convert them to FITS before further processing but both options have disadvantages: Either I accept that I do not use RawTherapee at all and let the stacking software convert my raw files directly to FITS or I use RawTherapee to produce Tiffs with my own profile and then let the stacking software convert all these tiffs to FITS which is an extra step and time consuming and clutters my HDD with dozens of gigabytes of unused tifs every time to clean up afterwards.
My ideal workflow would be: shoot hundreds of raw files as usual, then apply my debayering profile in RawThreapee and directly export them all to FITS, then use them in my stacking software (for example ASTAP) with no intermediate conversion and no additional disk usage at all.
