What is the purpose of validate_names()? #400

Hi, I am new to bcolz.

Besides restricting spaces per issue #314, what is validate_names() necessary for exactly?

I have a DataFrame with columns containing periods ., and commenting this check out doesn't seem to have an obvious negative effect. Thanks!
