Do wallpapers have to have particular dimensions or formats??

Description

Hi, since I have a bit of fun with Photoshop, I would kindly like to know what format or size I should use if I want to create a customized background - copy it into the background and have it displayed automatically on the login screen as it doesn't do it automatically and also by setting the screen login gives me a black background???
