Game crashes when attempting to collect quest reward from follower NPC

Describe the bug

after taking a quest to rescue an NPC's dog and then making that npc into a follower to help on said quest. completing the quest and selecting the "Maybe you can teach me something as payment?" option causes the game to crash

Steps to reproduce

1. Start new game on default scenario
2. Speak to NPC present and accept a quest from them (in my case it was the one to find their dog)
3. Ask the NPC to follow you and have them accept
4. Finish the quest
5. when you turn in the quest select the option for training as payment
