Note: This issue is part of my early to-do list and may or may not be added. I simply wanted to move my paper check list into something a bit more permanent and formal.

Summary

It should be possible to specify HTTP URLs as resource paths to allow files to be downloaded prior to a render op. This is similar to #2 but would be more generic and useful a broader range of contexts. (this, it might not need to be separated into a plugin)
