This works great on local hard disks, but SHFB gives a build error when I use the same project on either a virtual hard disk (VHD) or a OneDrive drive.
I suspect that the issue is that SHFB is using the filename exactly as above for the intermediate files which a local HDD is tolerant of and only expands the macro when the final file has to be written.

Changing the drive it builds from won't change how the tag is replaced as they're just values in the project/config files and that's done when they are generated. You didn't post the error you're getting so it's hard to know what the cause is. The log file should contain details. If you're building a Help 1 (CHM) file, the help 1 compiler does have issues with UNC paths and certain characters within paths noted in the FAQ help topic. Moving the working folder to a local drive and removing the problem characters works around those issues.
Hi Eric, I think you're correct that the error is coming from the Help 1 Compiler as its a popup window and not in the output log. Unfortunately that was a temporary solution I needed at site and I'm back on my development machine again. I think we can mark this as resolved.
Thanks for your help and ongoing efforts for this tool.
I use the following for the Help file name:
