I started my first internship three months after I went to high school in New York. I worked in the Science Department of my high school as an assistant who prepared laboratory equipment and supplies for all the science teachers. I watered plants, washed fish tanks, and organized lab materials as well as chemicals for the laboratory. I usually worked two to three hours everyday after school. Experiencing the first internship became my most impressive memory of my life.
I still remember my first day of work in January 2015, on a warm and sunny afternoon. I went up to the sixth floor to the laboratory with a feeling of curiosity and nervousness after I finished all of my classes for that day. I passed through that laboratory few times before, but I never got a chance to visit it and I never knew who was working in the laboratory. It was my first time working as an intern in the school and working with a teacher. I had no idea about what would happen after I started my first day of working. My mind started to create few different scenes automatically as I climbed up the stairs; imagining what was probably going to happen as soon as I entered the room. I felt that the stairway became shorter on that day, and I spent even more time on climbing it than I usually do. I hovered in front of the door of the laboratory for several minutes, and finally encouraged myself to knock on the shiny blue door. A woman asked me to enter with a clear and friendly voice. Her soft words made me feel a little relaxed before I went into the room. I was grateful and felt comfortable meeting a nice person when I just started a job in a new environment.
I stepped into the room curiously and quietly. I was curious about who was going to show up, what the room looked like, and what was inside of it. Only teachers and staffs were allowed to enter that room. After I entered the room, I saw a female teacher who wore a long white color shirt, and a pair of glasses sitting at the desk: the moment that I thought I was in a hospital and seeing a doctor. A ray of sunshine came through the window and sprinkled on her black and curly long hair. She looked so warm and peaceful. I introduced myself to her with a big smile on my face. She was the only person who worked in that laboratory alone everyday. The room was just about 25 by 30 feet. There were two long and tall carbines which kept a lot of different laboratory equipment and supplies standing at the back of the room. It made the room looked very serious. I looked through the carbines with my wide open eyes; I was so surprised to see that much glass laboratory equipment at one time. It was amazing! I knew that I was getting a little excited about my new working place. Then, I was asked to prepare a density lab for the next day.
I was kind of surprised when she asked me to do a lab because it was my first day of work, and I did not know where could I get the materials that were needed for the lab. Luckily, she was such a kind hearted person that she taught me step by step and I did what she told me to do. The purpose of doing this lab was to show several different liquids that could keep in the same text tube separately due to their different density. I took out all the liquids and equipment which listed on a list from the carbine carefully. As the teacher instructed me, I poured a specific amount of each of the liquids out of the original containers and measured them to make sure that they were the same quantity. Then, I poured all of the liquids one by one into the same test tube, as slowly as I could in order to avoid them touching the wall of the test tube. I kept repeating this same step for many time throughout the lab. It was a long process to make the lab done and it required a lot of patience and caution.
It was really an exciting moment to see what myself finally did. I did not mean that I was excited about what I had done; I mean that I was surprised about the beautiful outcome of the lab. A plain text tube finally became like a colorful rainbow that was filled with different colors of liquids. I almost screamed out because of the incredible result of the lab. That was just like my life, I could never know what was going to happen, and how it was going to surprise me as I worked for it. I did not even think about that I could get an internship in my school three months after I arrived in New York. I stared at the test tube for a moment wondering if it was a real rainbow which hung in the sky after the rain. People always felt excited and happy, and even hopeful while they were seeing a rainbow after experiencing depressing rainy weather. Didn’t they? Sometimes, life was really hard to live because you could never know what would happen at the end. However, if you worked hard and step by step, you could find out a wonderful and happy ending --just as beautiful as a colorful rainbow. That was my first day of work, a wonderful ending of the day and a new beginning of my life.
