Kannada typeface #257
Comments
AFAIK, it's upto @mjabbink, @BoldMonday and the rest of the team at IBM as to how important the Kannada writing system is and whether it should be prioritised. IBM Plex already supports an impressive number of languages so it may be possible. You can absolutely work on it! The whole of IBM Plex is licensed under the SIL Open Font License so you are welcome to fork this repository on GitHub, open up FontLab Studio and have a try to create Kannada in the unique style of IBM Plex. Keep in mind however you'd need to release it under a different name though as per the license. |
We are doing Kannada in 2020 |
Any other plans for non-Latin scripts? |
Thank you. |
and hopefully Tamil. IBM is in Bengaluru which of course primarily speak these languages. We’ll cover Devanagari (a logical choice), Kannada, and Tamil. |
With all due respect to Tamil language. Tamil language has NO significance in Bengaluru. Both literate and illiterate Tamil people migrant to Bengaluru, like all any other Indian community. Bengaluru is capital of Karnataka. Official language of Karnataka are Kannada and English. Kannada people, welcome all Indians to migrate to our city, unlike rest of INDIA. Reason for Kannada people being so KIND, is the language. Unfortunately, some of migrant community do not respect the city, language that welcomed them. Migrants behave like invaders. If rest of India, were even half the civilized community as Kannada people, they would all have created a city like Bengaluru in their own state. But civility, normalization doesn't come over night, it takes centuries. Whoever gave you the Idea that Tamil is one of the language in Bengaluru is a traitor in Kannada land. If by chance, you see too many Tamil speaking engineers/labors in Bengaluru OFFICE, its not because they are the best talent. It's purely NEPOTISM. Bengaluru is melting pot, however Kannada language is the language of Bengaluru. The day when Bengaluru gets dominated by other languages, It will be no better than Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Chennai, ... where people get mugged, lynched, harassed in broad daylight. Kannada land is invaded by certified engineers from neighboring states and central government, (who is confused behind UNIFORMITY and UNITY) who wants entire country to speak HINDI (which was created in 1947 along with the birth of India) overnight. |
@mjabbink I would be more than happy to help, support, test, ... the Kannada typeface. |
well, I was told told by multiple folks from our local office that those would need to both be supported. If you have a better suggestion please let me know. We had also original thought to create Bengali. |
sorry, I am not against supporting any other languages, including Tamil, Bengali, or any script in India or world. I was responding to your lines "and hopefully Tamil. IBM is in Bengaluru which of course primarily speak these languages." Please do not take it otherwise. Perhaps I overdrove my response. I am native Kannada speaker. I am working on couple of typefaces for Kannada script. I contribute in github for Kannada typeface with testing fonts across different shaping engines, etc. If there is anything I can do it, I will be more than happy to do. |
@mjabbink Interesting to hear that IBM has offices in Bengaluru. Anyway, any other plans for non-Latin scripts? (e.g. Armenian) |
Not everyone working at IBM in Bengaluru are from the region. Some are from all over speaking other languages as well. This is what I believe they told me were to most spoken at IBM. Either way we will be doing a few more scripts and Kannada will be most definite. The others might change as we go. |
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 |
@AlsoScratch This project is delayed until 2021 |
