Introduction

This page describes which things are best to do before you start the soldering.

Preparation

First off all you'll need to let your soldering iron heat up. Most soldering irons will do this pretty fast but some may need some time.

Start with the little things

It is best to start with low components and then continue with components that are a bit higher than that. And so on.

In general I would say this is about the best order:

  • Start with SMD components. My main PCB of the Dice Tower project has 2 SMD spots for SMD 0805 leds and 2 spots for SMD 1206 resistors. If you want to use them it is the best to start with soldering these SMD components.
  • The next most thin component would be the resistors. Also there are many resistors to solder on the main PCB and it would be a hassle to solder them later on between al other higher components.
  • The next thing I would solder is al the male and female headers.
  • The onboard leds.
  • Buttons
  • The DB9 serial connector for the display module (if used).
  • The cables to the seperate leds. Doing this in an earlier fase the cables can get in the way while rorating the board to solder other components. Also the cables can get cluttered.
