Without having some modern digital map tools your teammates should not see any markers you have made. They should need to copy the markers (like interaction-menu --> copy all markers from X.
Also X need to agree)

I agree, but to make it possible a BFT Item (Model) would be needed

I don't like the idea of a tablet like, for example cTab. The vanilla Arma map has all the functionalities it needs already build in. Now the thing that is weird, is that a folding map has magical markers that appear on it when someone 10 kilometers away places those in the right channel. It would be fine if the item in that slot wouldn't be a folding map.

What I'd like to have, is a folding map that does only allow local markers to be placed and seen. Some sort of advanced GPS thingy could replace the Arma map then without adding anything major.

I think a folding map that doen't allow communication over long distances is something, that could be usefull in some scenarios.

A folding map should also be hard to read in the dark without NVGs.

Or/And add the possibility to switch on a "flashlight" (red colored for night vision preservation while reading or white) that illuminates the map but also makes you slightly visible from a certain distance. (e.g. for Independant or Insurgent Forces).

Well this are interesting ideas!

One posibility would be to skip the tablet ui altogether:

  • If the unit has some tablet item, then the map screen becomes the tablet screen (maybe adding some UI overlay, or not), and there's commands to sync markers (with side, group, etc), show/hide markers by channel, etc. Also digital map measuring tools, BFT and waypoints become available.
  • If not, the map screen is the paper map. So normal map tools, only local markers that need to be copied. It would be interesting to test if removing free zoom is posibble (allowing some discrete zoom levels)

As for the folding map, are you thinking of something like the one from Tao, that displayed as an overlay on the main screen? That's useful for certain situations, but it would probably be very difficult to offer interactions there (e.g. map tools, drawing markers).

BTW: the idea of the flashlight is fantastic. Set the map screen lighting based on ambient conditions and force the player to use a flashlight or NVGs to enhance visibility?

Wasn't there an ST addon for A2 that toned down map brightness at night?

With today's NVG's it's very difficult to read a map.

No. I mean exactly the same thing you proposed. A paper map that doesn't show waypoints and markers set by others. And some sort of gadget that is basically what the map is now.
I'm against adding unnecessary overlays though.

Great, I completely agree with this.

We already have an issue for this things: #1227

Though overlays would add immersion and make this feature stand out when compared to Vanilla.

Probably. We could try something subtle and see how it looks before deciding.

Well, the default map already looks a bit like some sort of tablet, with a statusbar-like thing at the top.
