MAUI - Attach map to a ContentView instead of whole Content

Using MAUI we can show the map using the sample code:

var mapControl = new Mapsui.UI.Maui.MapControl();
mapControl.Map?.Layers.Add(Mapsui.Tiling.OpenStreetMap.CreateTileLayer());
Content = mapControl;

But if we try to attach the map to a ContentView (or a whatever other container object) the screen is blank.

<VerticalStackLayout x:Name="vsl">
    <ContentView x:Name="mapView">        
    </ContentView>
</VerticalStackLayout>

var mapControl = new Mapsui.UI.Maui.MapControl();
mapControl.Map?.Layers.Add(Mapsui.Tiling.OpenStreetMap.CreateTileLayer());
mapView.Content = mapControl
