btw -- turns out it's probably a good thing that my company's potential job positions kept flaking out. Boy has this place turned into a trainwreck over the past year.

Very much so. I've survived several rounds of layoffs. On one hand, I've got a job so there's no urgency. On the other hand, with each round of layoffs, there's that much more work on those of us who are left.
