Produce ideas and draft designs for "Maker Tools" (Webmaker+Firefox) on Firefox Desktop and Firefox Mobile.

What is the problem that you are trying to solve?

  • Problem for FF users on desktop:
    • the web is full of content ripe for editing and making, but unedited resharing is the expected default. The first step to editing/making is inaccessible to most people
    • opportunity for us:
      • kabillions on FF thinking about making and very few find their way to webmaker (or other tools for making)

Problem for FF users on mobile:

Who are the users you are trying to impact?

  • FF users on desktop
  • The win on desktop feel much more accessible (use this add-on instead of photoshop). The win on mobile is harder (use this add-on instead of 999 awesome, integrated apps). Let's learn on desktop first (with mobile friendly implementation).

What does success look like?

  • Selfish: More people will join Webmaker if we enable Firefox users to easily capture, edit, and share found content.
  • Altruistic: More people will edit/make found content even when sharing in siloed spaces
  • Metrics: Track use of Add-on??
  • Metrics: Firefox -> Webmaker traffic (UV->AU, and AU->EU)
  • Metrics: Partners asking to use/benefit from our editing features
partnership with wordpress/squarespace (share as page), internet archive, ???

What are some benchmarks for a solution?

  • Tumblr (just because of "re-sharing everything" features)
  • Instagram (IRL)
  • Over/Snapchat
  • Glitchr

What does the MVP look like?

  • a bunch of fleshed out ideas and designs to keep in the archives :)
  • clickable prototype, ready for testing to confirm our assumptions.
  • clear path to onboard new webmakers (integration points with webmaker.org?)

What are the risks associated with producing a solution to the problem?

  • wasting a lot of time on building custom software for problems that are already solved (e.g. image editing)
  • being swayed by the Firefox brand, as opposed to providing real utility/impact to our active users

Prototypes will test ways to offer Firefox users a gateway to making, publishing, and sharing via Webmaker.

@simonwex - Seeking developer(s) for 2 for input on prototypes (likely very different in both design and implementation). December = ideation, so not a big lift at this stage.

@xmatthewx fine to mention, also FYI there's a green 'needs-dev' label, I'll check that for the next heartbeat regularly.

@toolness can you be the lead dev for this exploration phase? Most of the work will be understanding what's possible in add-on world.

Sure!

In this short sprint, we clarified our scope. We shared a prototype, some mockups, and reviewed some benchmarks. We wrote some code.

In the next sprint, we will build an add-on for desktop. It will be designed for touch and we will keep an eye on mobile opportunities. While we believe in mobile-first, the opportunities there are more narrow and complicated. We will learn from the easier wins on desktop first, mindful of the dangers in this approach.

Mockup below shows a sidebar similar to plans for Webmaker's new product. Key differences: it is closely coupled with existing web content, the feature set is limited, it aims to improve the most ubiquitous forms of editing for reshares. We aim to meet users where they're at...

If we do that well, we can then level them up to more creative and open making and publishing.

An "image" made in the sidebar can be shared on common social sites or later deconstructed and extended on Webmaker.
