Usually I test changes to desktop environments with a virtual machine.

  1. First I need a local copy of the nixpkgs repository.
    $ git clone https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs.git
    $ cd nixpkgs
  2. Then I get a copy of the PR branch
    $ git checkout -b romildo-upd.lumina master
    $ git pull https://github.com/romildo/nixpkgs.git upd.lumina
  3. I also prepare a configuration file for a basic machine: configuration-lumina.nix
    { config, pkgs, ... }:

    {
      fileSystems."/" = { device = "/dev/sda1"; fsType = "ext4"; };

      boot.loader.systemd-boot.enable = true;
      boot.loader.efi.canTouchEfiVariables = true;

      environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
        vim
      ];

      services.xserver.enable = true;
      services.xserver.displayManager.lightdm.enable = true;
      services.xserver.desktopManager.lumina.enable = true;

      users.extraUsers.guest = {
        isNormalUser = true;
        uid = 1100;
        initialPassword = "g";
        extraGroups = [ "wheel" ];
      };
    }
  4. Then I build the system as a virtual machine:
    $ nixos-rebuild build-vm --option sandbox true -I nixpkgs=. -I nixos-config=configuration-lumina.nix
  5. And finally I run the virtual machine:
    $ QEMU_OPTS="-m 1G,slots=3,maxmem=4G" result/bin/run-nixos-vm
