Description of changes

This PR renames darwing.darling to darwing.darling-sandbox, since it only packages "the sandbox part" of Darling and is meant to be executed directly on Darwin instead of on Linux.

See also #227765 for the progress of darling packaging.

Things done
  • Built on platform(s)
    • x86_64-linux (All packages under pkgs.darwin evaluates successfully)
    • aarch64-linux
    • x86_64-darwin
    • aarch64-darwin
  • For non-Linux: Is sandbox = true set in nix.conf? (See Nix manual)
  • Tested, as applicable:
  • Tested compilation of all packages that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nixpkgs-review --run "nixpkgs-review rev HEAD". Note: all changes have to be committed, also see nixpkgs-review usage (done on Linux, which is actually not that helpful.)
  • Tested basic functionality of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • 23.05 Release Notes (or backporting 22.11 Release notes)
    • (Package updates) Added a release notes entry if the change is major or breaking
    • (Module updates) Added a release notes entry if the change is significant
    • (Module addition) Added a release notes entry if adding a new NixOS module
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

Absolutely! This might need to target staging, however.

Let me add a line in the release note and reword the commit to make it ready.

Distinguish this package from Darling,
the emulation layer to run Darwin apps on Linux

I've found something mysterious on my machine: removing that line from darwin.darling-sandbox doesn't break darwin.dtrace:

  cp libsystem_sandbox.dylib $out/lib/

So is the package only served as headers (so that darwin.darling-headers make more sense)? Or does it have something to do with the Nix sandboxing?

I don't have any experience developing software on Darwin, nor do I have a usable Darwin setup. All my knowledge about Darwin comes form Nixpkgs.

The package is introduced by @matthewbauer. Maybe we could ask him.
