The region in which the game takes place is constituted of several islands. The game is loosely divided in several “acts”, each one taking place on a different island. The player is not aware of those acts, it's just a convenient way of speaking of the different parts of the game.

  • The first act of the game takes place on the small island to the west. This is equivalent to a tutorial, with the story being linear in order for the player to familiarize itself with the basics of the game. Once the tutorial is finished, the player is free to cross a bridge leading to the second island.
  • The second act takes place on the medium island directly to the east of the starting island. The game opens up from this point, but the player still has a clear idea of which way is the “good one”, in order to not be overwhelmed. This island has a few gym leaders to fight. Once they're all beaten, the player is free to take a boat leading to the third island.
  • The third act takes place on the big central island. At this point, the player is given full freedom on which path to follow. There are several gym leaders on this island, and they can be fought in any order. Early in the third act, the player learns the ability to travel over water, allowing him to return to the previous islands (there may be some leftover stuff that was previously inaccessible) and to go to the unexplored islands for optional gym leaders. Once the player has beaten enough gym leaders, he can go fight the League.
