sphinxcontrib-programoutput [1] is not installing properly. You can see an example in the travis logs [2].

Did this package get removed from pypi for some reason?

The maintainer @lunaryorn has declared it is now "UNMAINTAINED, no issues, no pull requests" in its description and most of its issues and a PR.

I've never run into a situation like npm's left-pad before in Python. Our choices include:

  1. Investigate a replacement, perhaps:
    1. https://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-autoprogram/
    2. http://sphinxcontrib-argdoc.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
  2. 1-2-3-Not it! Wait for someone else to pick up the gauntlet
  3. Pick up the gauntlet ourselves
  4. Kill off docs that use it
  5. pip install https://pypi.python.org/packages/source/s/sphinxcontrib-programoutput/sphinxcontrib-programoutput-0.8.tar.gz
  6. Other?

@mmerickel I'm sorry, but it's been unmaintained for roughly two years now, like all the Sphinx extensions I published to PyPI. Others have been adopted, but this one wasn't, so I figured that no one used it anymore and thought it was safe to remove from PyPI.

I'm surprised to see someone still use it, and I'm sorry that I broke your build, but then, why did none ever came up and adopt the package in all this time?

@lunaryorn I'm not the person that chose to add this dependency to Pyramid. My concern is why it was removed from PyPI? Was it broken? AFAICT we had no problems using it. I am unaware of any projects that remove abandoned projects... a note is sufficient if people have issues with it.

@stevepiercy I'm going to need to remove these docs to get the build working again unless you can take over the project or issue a replacement in short order.

Looks like @lunaryorn re-pushed it to PyPI. Thank you!

@mmerickel I did not add it back again; someone else must have done so. It's still unmaintained, and I'll eventually remove the repository if no one comes to adopt it.

I'm not a project, I'm an individual. My time is limited, as is the scope of my interests. I choose the remove it because I don't want to be bothered with it anymore… and since none ever stepped up to adopted despite a prominent notice on Github I didn't think it'd be too important. Maybe a mistake, but then again, why should I bother? If none ever came to help can't be too important, can it?

I unsubscribed from this thread again; if need be please mention me again.

Interesting... stepping away from a project is fine, but deleting it is just toxic. No one stepped up likely because it just worked.

@stevepiercy I think we should drop the dependency... The versions that are pushed to PyPI right now are only wheels, and there isn't one for py33/py34. You or someone else can either fork the repo and push a release or we should just remove the docs.

@mmerickel @lunaryorn @emonty pushed it, see https://github.com/lunaryorn/sphinxcontrib-programoutput/issues/10

When something works, no one takes notice. As soon as something breaks, it gets noticed. Remember npm's left-pad? Maybe someone else will accept ownership.

@mmerickel I've got a full plate through Nov 8 election, after which I will look into replacement packages noted above or requesting a transfer of ownership to myself. We use it for these pages: http://docs.pylonsproject.org/projects/pyramid/en/latest/#p-scripts-documentation

In fact you suggested this package yourself #1153 (comment)

@lunaryorn I'm not sure what remains to be discussed. You've made your position very clear with regard to sphinxcontrib-programoutput and that's fine, albeit unfortunate, for the community of projects affected. We will adjust as is the nature of open source.

Feel free to PM me on freenode. I'm also always in #pyramid there as raydeo.
