When a person is already a member of a group, Bulk Update will not add that person to the same group with a different role. Bulk Update does not throw an error, and even shows a success message at the end of the process, indicating that the people were added to the group even though they weren’t. Adding a member of a group to the same group with a different role can be done manually, so it is allowed.
Expected Behavior
The Bulk Update process should allow people to be added to a group in cases where they are already members of the group under a different role.
Actual Behavior
The Bulk Update process allows you to proceed with the process of adding people to a group in which they are already members under a different role, but no group members are added at the end of the process, despite the success message that’s shown.
Steps to Reproduce
Note, these steps require demo data
Navigate to People > Group Viewer
Select a group with people in it (use “Alisha Marble’s Group” under “Section A”)
Select the checkbox next to Alisha Marble’s name
Click the Bulk Update (truck) icon at the top/bottom of the Group Members list
Expand the “Group” panel near the bottom of the Bulk Update page.
a. Action = Add To Group
b. Group = Select a target group (use “Decker Group” under “Section A” – Alisha Marble is a member of this group already)
c. Role = Leader
d. Member Status = Active
Click “Next” at the bottom of the block
Click “Confirm” on the confirmation page
Observe the green success message, indicating 1 person was successfully updated
Go back to People > Group Viewer and access the “Decker Group” under “Section A”
Observe that Alisha Marble is only in the group once, as a member and not as a leader
