This is the latest SuperTux compiled from git source, on Debian Stretch.

I have no idea how to get Tux out of the water regardless of how many times I tried. I watched a tutorial videos on youtube, too. None really helped me. I don't find any documents/tutorials about this new features.

I think Tux swimming is an awkward feature that should not be implemented. But if you wanted it to more perfectly resemble Super Mario then please implement it the better ways. Thanks.

This feature really make my playing experience with SuperTux a nightmare. Too bad Debian Stretch is too old so the AppImage doesn't work and I have to compile from source.

The pull request #1704 fixes swimming significantly, including making it easier to exit water. When that is merged (it needs a few tweaks still), swimming should have many improvements that would satisfy these complaints.

@CretinHo: Has this been resolved as of the latest build?

Meanwhile I upgraded to Debian Buster. I first encountered Tux swimming on Community Island but on this latest build, I can't input anything in this world map. None of the keys work, I can't move Tux at all. Surprisingly, everything is normal on other worlds, at least for Bonus World I.

It seems Community Island world has problems. Please tell me where else I could try Tux swimming so I could report it back to you. Thanks.

I'm very sorry to let you know. It's as bad as before. Nothing changed IMHO. I rolled back to the stable AppImage. I'm on world map Adventure to the New World I and I have no way to jump out of the water. Please check "The Pacific Ocean", finally I have to give up and quit the game.

I think I will stick with this last stable AppImage if Tux swimming will ever be merged to the official release. Until it's no longer supported (addons checksums mismatch).

@CretinHo: In "The Pacific Ocean" it's very easy to jump out of the water. You have to hold the boost key (usually the jump key) to go faster, and then propel out of the water. So there is very much a way out of the water...
Also don't say "Nothing changed," there were a very large amount of changes. And they are all objectively better than they were before. 😐
This game has its own set swimming behavior, and isn't meant to mimic Super Mario, so instead of trying to play it with the mindset of Super Mario swimming, play with the mindset of something you've never played with before; you can use the 4 directional keys to move in many directions, and hold the jump key to go faster. Simple and easy.

Could jump out of the water now, thanks.
