tsconfig.json paths is not respected when using ts-node/esm

I have a file at location src/lib/db.ts and a script script.ts that imports the db file using import ... from "$lib/db". My tsconfig.json contains

"paths": {
			"$lib": [
				"src/lib"
			],
			"$lib/*": [
				"src/lib/*"
			]
		},

It was set-up by SvelteKit. But when I do

node --experimental-specifier-resolution=node --loader ts-node/esm script.ts --project tsconfig.json

I get

/home/..../node_modules/ts-node/dist-raw/node-internal-modules-esm-resolve.js:757
  throw new ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND(packageName, fileURLToPath(base));
        ^
CustomError: Cannot find package '$lib' imported from script.ts.

How can I make it work?
