What's the purpose of get_post_content()?

I'm baffled as to why this function is named the way it's named, implemented the way it's implemented, and used the way it's used:

	function get_post_content( $content ) {
	return ! empty( $content ) ? $content : false;
	}

It is added as a filter hook for the_content, and also called in a few different places before echoing:

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with posts or with content (besides being hooked on the_content, and it's not clear to me why replacing an implicit false with an explicit false is useful in any of the contexts where it appears.

I hope to become a better WordPress developer by understanding why this function appears in the wd_s starter theme :)
