Thanks for working on this! I'm not sure the blue color, or the icons add value. Have you encountered yet the problem with a similarly named template yet? As a small fix I think we should probably do less than what this PR does — just fix the hardcoded text. And then if the dual names cause headaches, we can revisit that. |
It doesn't seem like a stretch to imagine someone creating a template for their "About" page and calling it "About". Another option would to only use the icon for one label, or to use a text prefix instead:
Blue is the standard color for interactive elements, no? 🤔 I would like to land the change where the post title takes you back to the post editor as that opens the door to removing the back button. |

Good point. I think we'll want to give this some more design thought, as right now the two buttons look like a single button with text that wraps onto two lines — for that reason it might make sense to use black text and a chevron for the dropdown, like we do for the site editor:

Good point. I suppose this helps distinguish the behaviours too – the post title takes you somewhere, the template title opens a popover. We can use the same pattern when we add the post title to the top bar (#27093). @paaljoachim will be happy :D

From the latest screenshot, this looks like it's in a decent place. For whatever reason, I can't compile use the template editor anymore, I get this error both with my own FSE theme, and with TT1 blocks:

Nice catch! These changes make sense to me, I manually tested the following
- Displays page title and current template being edited
- Can edit template title in the drop down and save a custom template with a new title
- Can delete a custom template from the dropdown
- Clicking on Page name returns to "normal" editing mode
All working as expected.
I left a couple code comments; in my mind the translation related one is the only thing blocking this.
Probably for a separate PR, we need to give some attention to the top bar at certain screen sizes:
There's a larger problem here for plugins that add menus to the top bar as well, they end up causing similar layout issues, for example: Automattic/wp-calypso#50758 (comment)

I took a quick look at the tests, hoping to fix them. This appears to be the failing one: And well, yeah, "About" used to be hardcoded. But now it says "Singular", some of the time, and whatever else you might want to call it the rest:
So I think the original intent of the test needs to be revisited. I think that's basically what Riad asked about above. |

I went ahead and updated the title being checked in the e2e test to match the page title ("Just an FSE Post") created for the test. But the same e2e test is still failing due to js console warnings 😕 |

Everything worked well, on my tests. The end-to-end test failure was because of a toolbar warning and I fixed the issue. I think this PR is ready to merge.

Here's the current title area in the template editor:
Aside from the styling issues, the "About" title is hard coded. It seems this was an oversight in #31678.
This PR updates that "About" text to highlight the referring post title, and serve as an escape hatch back to the post editor. It also adds tooltips to each link, and icons to help clarify which is which in situations where a post may have a similarly named template.
