This will allow support for other platforms like ARM or RISC-V. Some platforms will have different ways of doing things so the API must be compatible. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system_abstraction_layer

There should be proper ways to shutdown / reboot, with drivers for the APM or ACPI power management standards
