The main benefit of this is being able to find the appropriate ROM when making patches, so it doesn't need to be specified on the command line. A metadata file in the dump can specify the rom hash it was dumped from; that plus a search dir could make autodetection work even for different users working on the same mod repo, but with different local file trees.
