Positioning problem when shooting the laser

The SPHERE is suppossed to alineate itself with the comet and enemy's base then shoot. Well, guess what: it doesn't.

I think I may have mistaken here. May someone briefly explain me what the SPHERE is supposed to do when shooting the laser?
Also, why there are two strategies depending on the shots left? Shouldn't we do the same thing whether we have 20 or 10 charges left?
