Sorry for the long title, but the PDF shows on the last page where it should be a references section, but it's for the footnotes which don't get rendered to the document. The only references shown are the [^23] footnotes, not the [23] style ones, important distinction. Let's clean this up?

Kramdown will indeed only take into account [^xy] format for references and not [xy].
