Do we want to create a roadmap for 6.0.0 releases?

For March (I can't be there):

Releases:

  • Any need for a stable-4 release at this time?
  • 5.4.0 Last call, release review
  • 6.0.0 release review
  • Set a provisional 6.0.0 release date ? (Do we wait until after the April 27 meeting for 6.0.0)

General:

  • Darken / Black - should we add this action to community.aws too?
  • Should we bulk apply Black just before branching 6.0.0? (Prep 5.5.0, apply Black to main, branch 6.0.0 and prep 6.0.0)
  • GitHub Actions - seems to be on the Cloud Team priority list, anything worth warning the community about?

Since there are changelog fragments, yes. let's ship a last one.

My thought was either we release it now, and it's possible the last (but we can't say already). Or we delay until the same time as 6.0.0 and release it as explicitly being the last planned 4.x release (ansible-collections/community.aws#1700 is currently the only non-docs change)

Since the March meeting didn't really happen (the usual suspects all had conflicts), I'm going to drop a quick update here:

We had a discussion on IRC/Matrix -

On the subject of Darker / Black: in general people seem to favour starting to use the Black formatting style/linter. The current idea is that just before branching stable-6 and preparing 6.0.0 we'll bulk apply Black to our codebase. This means 5.x "feature" PRs should have already been backported and merged, and we'll be switching it over to "bug/security fixes only", hopefully minimizing the pain from formatting changes during backports...

On the subject of 6.0.0 - There aren't any blockers at this time (although it looks like there's a push to get some backup support in) we're still aiming for a late April release, but will probably just coordinate timings via IRC/Matrix

  • structured point releases - Monthly cadence release every fourth Tuesday of the month.

+1 to having a structured cadence.

Counter proposal on the date - first Tuesday of the month. This gives us the opportunity to quickly discuss the release (including any priority reviews) during the meeting on the fourth Thursday...

  • Use GitHub discussions - How would folks feel about using GitHub discussions on ansible-collections/amazon.aws as a pre-meeting location for asynchronous discussions on things that would be on the meeting agenda. This means that when folks can't make the meeting, their basic opinions on a topic can still be heard. (I'm not a big fan of using issues for this)

  • amazon.aws 5.5.1
  • amazon.aws 6.1.0
  • community.aws 5.5.1
  • community.aws 6.1.0

  • Promote some modules to supported in 7.0.0? I'm thinking sts_* the remaining iam_* (we have an RFE for the sts modules, the IAM ones just seem like a good idea if we're moving things around anyway)

  • 7.0.0 release planning - target November?

@hakbailey

  • Release prep and cutoff dates - Zuul has been very slow lately which caused a delay in the August releases. We may want to have a cutoff for changes on Friday and start prepping releases on Monday for Tuesday releases, at least as long as we are dependent on Zuul for CI checks.

Updates:
We agreed to add aws_region_info and s3_bucket_info to the list of modules we are already working on migrating, but not any other s3 modules and not iam_saml_federation.

We agreed to plan the 7.0.0 releases for Nov 2, to be included in ansible 9

We agreed to begin using forum.ansible.com for meeting agendas

The next amazon.aws stable-6 release will be made next week, during which time the team will rotate the galaxy keys on zuul
