It would be great it this script could create a css file with calculated css background positions.

Hmm, this doesn't look simple. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4043809/is-there-an-equivalent-of-spriting-for-svg-images-in-web-pages and the link there to http://simurai.com/post/20251013889/svg-stacks . PRs considered, though.
