Seems like an issue with vger-rs.

How can I help debug? rust newbie, but otherwise experienced developer

Thanks for your offer of assistance @bammi ! I think the underlying issue is this: audulus/vger-rs#1

I set up windows today and I can reproduce the issue, but I don't yet know how to debug rust (or shaders) on Windows.

Are you using VS code ? Then there is an extension called CodeLLDB for debugging .

I am using it. I'll set up that extension, thanks @Luc1d1ty! However I think I've mostly figured out the issue.
