My dyer and washing machine are stacked upon eachother and are 'old fasioned', e.g. not smart.

My approach would be to buy an ESP32-CAM module and point it towards the front of the dryer and washing machine and take a snapshot every 2 minutes (?) and upload it to a local server.

Which will process the image and with the use of OCR and some other image tools I can read the values on the front displays and return them to home assistant.

  • Purchase ESP32-CAM
  • Purchase FT232RL FTDI Programmer
  • Program the board
  • Attach some sort of power source
  • Place it in the laundry room
  • (Optional) make it wireless
