Internationalization

can be referred to as the design and development of the content, of a product, application, or document, so that it can be localized for target audiences that vary in culture, region, or language. It can also be referred to as the process of designing software to support multiple languages, cultures, and regions.

It involves considering various aspects of software development, such as user interface, data storage, and communication protocols, to ensure they are compatible with different languages and cultural norms. The benefits or importance of internalization is that

  1. it enhances user experience,
  2. it meets legal requirements,
  3. it improves localization, and
  4. it expands reach.
Supported language translations

Example The example below shows the CHEFS homepage in the English language, and after the language switch to the French language, it shows looks like in the French Language.

How to add translations to your form

The following steps will give the basic structure for doing translation of the content that will be in your form. The effort to actually write the translations for each block of text is still up to you to do. If you want to try it out, you can start with some simple sentences that don't have a complex grammatical structure, and are free of acronyms and words that might only make sense within the context of your organization or specialized body of knowledge.

This example will allow you to switch the translation for the words "First Name" and "Last Name" between French and English:

  1. Drag the component called "Hidden" onto your Form (this is found on the "Advanced Data" section)
  2. In the logic tab of the component, click on the "Add Logic" button
  3. For the Logic Name field let's type "translations"
  4. For the Trigger type, select "javascript"
  5. copy and paste the code below into the Text Area of the javascript

  1. Add more language(s) by copying and pasting a new line to the end of the file,
  2. Change "fr" to the shortcode of the languages you want in your translation
  3. put in the comma separated list of translations ("English phrase" : "translated phrase",)

If you had lots of phrases to translate you can use this alternate formatting:

How to Translate in HTML Element Component

Steps:

  1. Drag the component called "Hidden" onto your Form (this is found on the "Advanced Data" section)
  2. In the logic tab of the component, click on the "Add Logic" button
  3. For the Logic Name field let's type "translations"
  4. For the Trigger type, select "javascript"
  5. copy and paste the code below into the Text Area of the javascript
  6. in the code the variables "textWithTags1" and "textWithTags2" are used. you can change those to be more descriptive of your content.
  7. Drag another "Hidden" component onto your form (this is found on the "Advanced Data" section), and in the label field (found on the Display tab) add this "PreventRedraw" Also, set the default value to false.

Languages Translation Model

The languages translated were those with higher populations in BC. For the CHEFS admin console as a minimum viable product we used some automated translation tools for a first cut, and are now having native speakers do a review of each for us. The following tables shows our progress having native speakers review.
