That sounds like a neat idea, but I don't have any sense of how complicated it would be to add that into the game. This isn't one of the original features from the DOS version or the Windows 95 port. I haven't really explored the flight engine much beyond what was needed to reinstate planets and cockpit damage. I like the idea, but I don't think this is something I can do any time soon, and there are other fixes and features that are more vital to restoring the game experience (such as fixing keyboard input issues in WC2).

No problem, I understand that this is a hobby project. Take your time! I am already glad that you take this idea into consideration.
If implemented well, 3D positional audio can greatly improve immersion. Check out for instance this video with headphones: Doom II: Hell on Earth w/ 3D spatial sound in GZDoom 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
