I know there is a dependency to jQuery UI too, but maybe this could be done to have a very minimalistic contentEditable editor.

The whole Hallo codebase is built on the jQuery UI widget factory, and therefor it really is a hard dependency for us.

Feel free to fork the code for a jQuery-free version, though! And if you do, let us know :-)
