Both flashed with Memory Card Annihilator 2.0 on a PS2 SCPH-50002. The memory card for the 5502 freezes when the memory card option is selected and nothing happens. The memory card for the 7500 continues straight into the memory card screen and the PS1 BIOS does not detect any data. The memory card for the 7500 cannot be copied to however, and no games read it as existing. It also freezes any PS2 software. Both cards are currently unrecoverable (I don't have any software that can format them without freezing), and both cards were fully formatted in MCA before the files were written.

You cannot use a FreePSXBoot'd MC for savegames anyway, because the memorycard data is corrupted on purpose.
For savegames, you need to unplug the MC right after launching the game and plug in a "normal" MC.

For formatting, have you tried to launch MCA with a normal MC plugged in, starting a full format of it and before MCA actually starts formatting (I think it's asking twice, not sure), swapping the good MC with the hacked MC before the second confirmation?
Better make a backup-image of the good MC, just in case.

Hello. I'm aware the memory card cannot be used for savegames but figured it was worth attempting to access the cards with the memory card manager and some games as part of the troubleshooting. I have another memory card intended for saving games to that I'm not using to host the exploit.

Will get back to you with that trick for reformatting.

Quick update. Still freezes if I quick swap as I proceed with either a fast, full format, or rewrite. have also updated the first comment to reflect it was MCA v2 and an SCPH-50002. I also tried different USB ports on each run in case that was an issue.

Did you flash the .mcd files as they are? Or did you use some converting tools before copying them on the USB device you used? On the PS1 you could try the disc swap trick to launch PSX Hacker Kit (19 in 1) disc (google is your friend) and enter memory card manager program to format the memory cards as I did. You'll have to insert the memory cards AFTER the program started.

Hiya. I directly renamed the files from .mcr to .mcd as per advice with using annihilator (necessary for the mca to detect the file and select it from what i read) but otherwise didn't edit the files. I'll give that a try and see if I can write them again, cheers. (may be eight+ hours from now, new zealand timezones)

I don't think renaming can create issues...

Google PSX Hacker Kit 18 in 1 and grab the image from Archive.org. Burn it, find a way to boot the CD on the PS1, or you could try booting it on a PS2, launch Memory Card Manager, insert the card, wait until it detects it, select format, and you are done.

I can confirm this works.

Tested with freepsxboot-unirom-fastload-20210419-bios-4.5 on a scph-102

The easiest way to boot the CD is obviously using the same FPSXB MC you're going to format/recover.

Unless you're doing unsure tries (i.e. you try the exploit for scph-102 4.5 but your Ps1 could be a 4.4 or viceversa). In this case, if you put the wrong FPSXB version, you have to block the lid sensor and disk swap to PSX Hacker Kit from an original game.

Is this still a problem on the latest 20211004 build? If not this should be closed.
