We submitted an application for CHAOSS to participate Summer 2021:
https://summer.iscas.ac.cn/help/en/community/

It's pretty much like GSoC in China, although the project ideas are not limited to code contributions.

CHAOSS is now a qualified participating organization in Summer 2021, we need to hash out the project ideas as soon as possible, how do we collaborate on that?

As a starting point, it could be based on the ideas from GSoC:

  • Idea: Advancing Risk Prediction With Machine Learning in Augur
  • Idea: Build an expert system to provide recommendations to users in a user interface
  • Idea: Automatically identify Contributor Aliases (emails, platform user accounts) to Increase Parsimony of Statistics and Metrics With Privacy Enhancement
  • Idea: Develop a Shared Data Resource Focused on Dependencies, Risk and Vulnerabilities in Open Source Software
  • Idea: Extend data model and user interface to capture better information about contributors
  • Idea: Implement user roles/permissions and OpenID
  • Idea: Build Prototype Metric Display Options on CHAOSS Website
  • Idea: Automate Metrics Release and Process Improvement

Thanks for this @xiaoya-Esther

Yes, we can certainly start with these ideas (assuming the GSoC mentors are okay with it).

A few questions:

  1. Are there restrictions on who can apply? Can it be a global set of applicants?
  2. Would we post the ideas in this repo or would we post the ideas on the Summer 2021 website?

Perhaps, as this is a new project for us, we start with a smaller set of potential projects.

Thanks @xiaoya-Esther -- It's fantastic that CHAOSS can participate in Summer 2021! 🎉

I recommend making an open call on the CHAOSS mailing list and asking for mentors to submit ideas.

Reusing GSOC ideas may work but some ideas will be addressed during GSOC and there may not be a need to do the same thing again.

Does the Summer 2021 timeline overlap with GSOC? If so, then there may be a concern with how much time mentors can dedicate to both GSOC and Summer 2021.

Thanks for the feedback! @germonprez @GeorgLink

  1. Are there restrictions on who can apply? Can it be a global set of applicants?

No, the only restriction is that only students can apply. The documentation describes the policy on how non-Chinese students receive their bonus, so it could be global, although I suppose most of the applicants will come from China.

  1. Would we post the ideas in this repo or would we post the ideas on the Summer 2021 website?

https://summer.iscas.ac.cn/help/en/community/
It says "The community should launch the "Summer 2021" page (HTML, Wiki, etc.) on the community official website (or project open repository), including the detailed list of all project tasks provided by the community / project team, providing the project task information and corresponding reference materials with the estimated development workload of 3 months."

We can post the ideas in this repo first since that is also the workflow of GSoC、GSoD, I suppose the committee would integrate them into the Summer 2021 website then. Also refer to how other communities do this: https://summer.iscas.ac.cn/#/org/orglist?lang=chi

I recommend making an open call on the CHAOSS mailing list and asking for mentors to submit ideas.
Perhaps, as this is a new project for us, we start with a smaller set of potential projects.

Agree! There are some good potential ideas exclusive of GSoC that we've discussed at the AP meeting, i.e Build a new Augur worker for Gitee; Identify contributions from employees to a variety of open source projects, etc. Making an open call on the mailing list is a great idea.

Does the Summer 2021 timeline overlap with GSOC?

The development phase is from Jul 1st to Sep 30th, so yes, there is some overlap with GSoC. Maybe we could call for supports from some of the community members from China who are willing to be mentors?

Thanks for the helpful information!

I would guess that the next step is to send a request for ideas to the maillist.

I just have a quick question about it, how can we elaborate the ideas list in the issue?

Wow can we elaborate the ideas list in the issue?

Send an email to the chaoss mailing list and ask for ideas from potential mentors.

CHAOSS has proposed three ideas for the program, thanks to the mentors who helped with the ideas.
https://summer.iscas.ac.cn/#/org/orgdetail/chaoss?lang=en

@xiaoya-Esther and I will add the -ideas.md and -interest.md pages to the repository as we would follow the same guidelines as GSoC, GSoD and Outreachy. With that, I think we can close the issue.
