Base box root password

I just downloaded the debian stretch server box from the following url: virtualbox.box , added it to vagrant and then wanted to update the box from .vagrant/boxes/. After importing and starting the box in virtualbox, attempting to login with the user root and password puppet results in an incorrect login.

Is the stated default password wrong, or am I going about updating the box in the wrong way?

I was able to log into the box using vagrant:vagrant and was then able to export the box
