- AARM Metrics or the AARM Method is a framework for understanding a product's metrics
- AARM is an acronym that refers to the four main categories: Acquisition, Activation, Retention, and Monetization.
- Acquisition
- tracking customer sign-ups
- Activation
- getting those acquired users to register fully (i.e. for Google+, upload a photo or complete their profile)
- Retention
- getting users to use the service
- Monetization
- collecting revenue from users
- Acquisition — where/what channels do users come from?
- Activation — what percent have a “happy” initial experience?
- Retention — do they come back and re-visit over time?
- Referral — do they like it enough to tell their friends?
- Revenue — can you monetize any of this behavior?
- helps you identify which metrics you should use for your product / service
- There are four steps to this framework:
- Step 1: Articulate Your Goals
- Step 2: List the Actions That Matter
- Step 3: Define Your Metrics
- Step 4: Evalute Your Metrics
- The case for metrics BEFORE you start development:
- Metrics help you maintain focus
- Metrics set a common goal for team to rally around
- Metrics hold you (the PM) accountable to your users and business
- Metrics enable more objective decision-making during the critical launch period, including triage and prioritization
