Question

Can this be deprecated in favor of https://crates.io/crates/kademlia-dht now, which has been updated 3 months ago and has more activity overall?

We may still need to roll our own. The module linked performs IO, which may not work for our intended use: https://gitlab.com/jeffrey-xiao/kademlia-dht-rs/blob/master/src/node/mod.rs#L37.

Parity has a really good impl we could copy over; believe it should be faster as well.
