The Aetherian Project inspired in Snow Crash’s Black Sun Metaverse Club

Have you ever seen Tron? How about Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, The Matrix, Or Fifth Element? Have you ever read Snow Crash? Or Neuromancer? Or Ready Player One? Do you dream of a cyberpunk dystopian future where we live majority of our lives in a virtual world?

If so, we welcome you to one of the largest community driven VR cities to ever been created, The Aetherian Project.

0. State of the art

1. Introduction

1.1 Rationale

We have set out to create a city unlike anything ever created before, a city that would make William Gibson and Neal Stephenson proud. A living breathing cyber-punk city organism that is materialized by our community and that evolves thanks to contributions from members. In this city, everyone would have a place to call home and a place to be whomever they want, whether it be a merchant selling VR replicas of Kaneda’s motorcycle from Akira, skins for avatars of all shapes and sizes, members that just want to come in and game. We dream to build a city where all your cyberpunk fantasies are possible.

1.2 History

The team started gathering together in Decentraland’s Slack many months ago with the idea of replicating The Aetherian Project Club and making it the center of a cyberpunk city located in Decentraland. Later, due to copyright issues, the team decided to adopt another naming and not replicating The Black Sun but the interpret its concept into an all-cyberpunk city.

Our team has a diverse history around IT, 3D modeling, city planning, and at its center for interest towards science fiction, cyberpunk and postcyberpunk aesthetics and the digital worlds we’ve experienced through screens since we were young.

1.3 Inspiration

Snow Crash is a science fiction novel by American writer Neal Stephenson, published in 1992. Like many of Stephenson's other novels it covers history, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, religion, computer science, politics, cryptography, memetics and philosophy.

The title of the novel refers to a form of failure of the Apple computers that produced an image on screen similar to the one seen in a TV without signal [1], related in the novel with chaos and loss of information (which the author calls Infocalipsis); is, at the same time, a reference to Neuromancer's first sentence by William Gibson, the most popular novel of the literary subgenre termed as cyberpunk, where the sky is compared to the image of a spoiled television.

Thus, Stephenson's novel is full of referential and parody elements to its genre, recognizable to the expert reader, but without neglecting humor, action, and philosophy, as well as mathematical and scientific concepts around new technologies, as the cyberspace that is called "Metaverse".

The novel tells the story of Hiroaki Hiro Protagonist, a real-world pizza delivery guy, but warrior prince (samurai) at Metaverse, who one day is about to not deliver a pizza on time, which is why he knows YT, a teenage skater who works as a messenger. Shortly after, Hiro discovers the existence of a powerful computer virus in the Metaverse, which projects a constant noise image on a monitor, and that affects the capacity of the language of the individual that contemplates that image.

The main contributions of the novel to popular culture have been the use of the term avatar to refer to an image of identity on the Internet, and the application to massive role-playing games (MMORPG) as reflected in the Metaverse of the novel.

1.4 The Aetherian Project’s vision

Aetherian City will be one of the main attractions for visitors and dwellers of Decentraland, as it intends to be the largest cyberpunk-agglomeration of the metaverse which will have Fractus, the metaverse club inspired on The Aetherian Project, as its focal point. The purpose of this city is to put forward an immersive experience thanks to the homogeneity of its concept and materialization, where each individual will be able to life it’s cyber-dreams.

2. Aetherian Project’s Club: Fractus

2.1 Concept

Fractus, based on The Black Sun from Snow Crash, will be the metaverse’s Night Club, a massive building in the center of the city which will host many activities and a space for all the citizens to gather.

2.2 Membership

Membership to Fractus will be based off the citizenship of the city. There will be multiple tiers of membership that will get you access to different areas. As the levels of citizenship are still being decided, I will create an example here for the sake of the proposal that our membership will loosely follow. Take note that this will most likely change for final proposal:

1. Vouchee
A vouchee is the membership given to all Decentraland users. This membership comes with rights to enter Fractus but they will not be able to participate in almost any of the functionality of the interior of Fractus. This level of membership is primarily used as a means to tour the facility and give them an opportunity to see what it has to offer before paying for a membership. Items that would be disabled under this membership would be as follows:
i. Private Chat
ii. Ability to partipate in gaming tournaments
iii. TBD

2. Members
This level of membership is a paid membership. A user of Decentraland can pay a predetermined amount of MANA to be able to join Fractus as a member. This would give them access to all base level content (all of which will be chosen at a later time) which would consist of things such as:
i. Participating in gaming tournaments
ii. Members only lounges and areas
iii. Exclusive areas of the casino
iv. Viewing Parties for Events (MLG streams, Soccer streams, etc)
v. More TBD as

3. Contributor
Contributor membership will be given to the individuals who are helping develop Fractus and as well as the Aetherian City. Areas of exclusivity to this membership are still TBD

4. Stakeholder
Stakeholder membership will be roughly the same as contributor but will be given to individuals who have staked LAND to the Aetherian city and to Fractus. Areas of exclusivity to this membership are still TBD

5. Founder
Founder membership/citizenship will be given to those who have helped The Aetherian Project both financially and developmentally since the very beginning of its lifespan. Exclusivity of this membership is still TBD.

2.2 Activities

This has been one of the most talked-about areas of The Aetherian Project thus far. The ideas that have been put forth for activities that will take place in Fractus are as follows:

1. Gaming
Gaming tournaments (CS: GO, LoL, etc) being able to be played on massive screens that all members can watch. Alongside this, there will be an arcade (Flynn’s Arcade from Tron) that will house stand-up game cabinets that play every ROM you can think of.
Within Fractus there will be a full blown casino. We anticipate this as being one of the primary attractions to the club. There will be gaming tables of all types. We’re also working on potentially making it possible to “get involved” on events.

2. Tournament Arena
Imagine the arena from Tron: Legacy where they ran Light Cycle races. That’s what we want to be able to build out in Fractus. The games are TBD but these will be game tournaments that players can enter and win actual MANA.

3. Night Club
This will be the main entry area of Fractus when you first enter. All members are allowed to mingle here. Description of what we hope this to be like will follow in the aesthetics section.

4. More TBD
We have multiple other ideas for more activities to incorporate that will be announced at later dates once we’ve solidified our initial offering.

2.3 Aesthetics

The current vision of Fractus will be a massive black pyramid that sits at the center of the city. The city and its blocks will emanate outwards from this point.

The current plan for this club is for it to be other-worldly with the entrance leading you in to another world, that of which a club floor that floats through space with stars, planets and nebulas floating all around the subject. Circling the club floor will be massive video screens that display either videos that go with the music of the club but will also be used to display video feeds from MLG gaming tournaments.

2.4 Monetization

This is a sensitive topic of this proposal as we’re working to make Fractus a primary source of revenue for the city. As of right now we’ve agreed that all money we acquire from any of the monetized activities or membership fee profits will be used to purchase more land, help pay developers and artists, and pay for any type of fees associated with running Fractus.

There are currently no plans for the proceeds of Fractus to financially benefit the Founders or any other member. The funds created by the Fractus will be held in a multi-sig wallet so no one person has complete access to them. All proceeds made will be put right back into the city and Fractus for further development and ensure their prosperity in order to become the blossoming metropolis we dream it can be.

3. Aetherian City: Architecture and urban design

3.1 City Scheme

Urban planning and building restrictions in the Aetherian city will be necessary in order to guarantee a homogeneous development and consistent aesthetics.

People who visit medieval towns for the first time or contemporary suburbs which have an organic framework, often feel lost and disoriented, which can lead to anxiety, fear, and sense of uneasiness. Even though one of this example has an unplanned growth and the other is planned, you can see the dangers of a completely framework-free city, where streets can develop odd parkours and lead to people not visiting them as a result. Lastly this provokes excluded and segregated zones where land price diminishes.

Each district will be radiocentric within themselves but contribute to the multicentric city in the whole. Besides this, there are also the "green spaces" to be designed and planned, which will serve not only as public places for the community but also to fight overcrowding.

This is a reduced view, due to the fact that right now we don’t have any certainties about how many parcels we will have. Each citizen with a project will submit it for evaluation to a board, also stating it's necesities and extension, in order for it to be located in the most convenient place.

Regarding each case of building, there's also the possibility for smaller undertakes to subdivide the interior disposition of parcels (only by placing an over layer, not technically) in each block. Thus, varying the internal disposition in 3 different angles without affecting the exterior disposition and allowing for more options when building roads and paths inside the city.

The urban-layer will be given for each parcel and project, to guarantee the functionaly of the city and that every parcel is reachable.

3.2 Transportation Infrastructure

Although teleportation is the best option to ease the participant’s experience to travel around the city there’s also a sense of placing the ports in the center of each “district” in order to promote the displacement and discovery of the city. This way the users are "forced" to get into the different districts and see what is in them in order to take the teleportation method. This approach could be an optimal solution in order to prevent people for just jumping from place to place of interest, just going to what they know and not giving the chance to other creators to be seen. It will help, in some way, that exclusive districts are formed that take all the audience from other creators, giving them the chance to expose their work, offerings etc.

We advocate for having streets between parcels of approx. 0,8m width (yes, I know it's not much, but is the minimum I can ask each LAND owner to give for public space, this can be wider if the owner has no problem in sharing more of his LAND to contribute with the city transportation infraestructure), this streets can be switched on and off depending on each land owner’s necessity and preference, as good planning of accessibility and teleportation ports can contribute to mitigate the chances of having a segregated city, promoting interaction and exchange between neighborhoods and districts, this way enhancing the chances of each person to show their content and to be accessible for other users as every parcel will be accessible. What’s more, a user-friendly environment will attract more visitors and encourage them to dwell in those places.

3.3 Public Transport

If enough revenue is achieved, one of the goals of the Aetherian Foundation is to provide citizens with a free monorail transport system, which will contribute to provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that result in positive multipliers effects such as better accessibility to markets, employment and additional investments as well as preventing segregated areas in the city.

3.4 Public Infrastructure

Part of the revenue generated in the city will be destined to the generation of public spaces destined for the citizens to expose and share content, and where different activities will take place, such as art exhibitions, or concerts. These public spaces will be materialized like open parks, lakes or buildings such as The Convention Center which is currently being developed by some community members.

3.5 Cyberpunk Aesthetics

A possible approach could also be to develop one type of cyberpunk aesthetic by district such as: postcyberpunk, biopunk, steampunk, dieselpunk; with Arcology’s architectural design principles. Also, the aesthetics of Hans Ruedi Giger in Prometheus could be incorporated in a more organic/punk take.

There will be an aesthetic's board, comprised by the founders and some citizens which will deliberate about the pertinence of each construction in order to get approved and to be able to place it in the city.

I would like you to consider this as a mega habby (happy hobby) project between us, where right now we are focused on building a concept and out main focus is not generating revenues or economic gains. I don't want to have angry or dissapointed people because they didn't make any economic gains.
You are the owner of the LAND, the only thing we ask is that you follow an aesthetic. You can transfer and sell it, but the next owner should comply with the aesthetics.
See it like a group of people that likes the same concept and they decide to build together so the concept is not lost.

I need help developing a theater venue for this district. Venue will have moving elements. I've discussed the preliminary concept with a couple of folks, but no one I've connected with knows programming.

yes - I went in later and sent MORE MANA in to reserve land in the project. I still have a bunch sitting in the "Genesis city" queue. I suppose I MIGHT want to exercize that option - and if i don't I'll get it released in Dec.

I would like to join your slack as well. I have deep VR/AR contacts and experience going all the way back to the first wave of VR research back in the 90's. I also am part of a W3C proposal for a new protocol to tie physical world coordinates to virtual world spaces. "owen93 at Gmail"

Has anyone done any competitive analysis on this? Because most of what is described here already exists. Is there any concern about duplicating efforts? Maybe contributing to existing projects instead of starting from scratch would help shave years off of development efforts.

the project is interesting. but the distribution of wealth of the city is really not clear for those who give up a piece of land. I hesitate to join this project for this reason. What is clearly the status of those who allowed the obtaining of all these plots through their financial investment? They do not seem to me that you're talking about donation for the project so you really need to clarify.

It went through months of refinement, discussion, and adjustment for legal and securities considerations, yet remains the basis of what may be the most democratic and certainly the largest and most dynamic, community-driven district in Decentraland.
